The grand legacy of Muncherji Murzban’s contribution to Bombay’s landmark buildings has stood the test of time

In the last quarter of the 19th century when Victorian Bombay was creating infrastructure, imposing buildings were being constructed to house offices and public amenities and a few grand residences outside the erstwhile fortified town.  While most of the architects associated with these buildings were British, Muncherji Murzban’s name stands out as an exception. As contractor for the construction of 27 buildings between 1872 and 1893 and designer of 12, he was admitted to the Royal Institute of British Architects (1889) and the Institute of Civil Engineers (1896) though he had no formal training in architecture.
