Meherhomji’s musafari

Pirojshah Pestonji Meherhomji who went on a voyage to America in 1862 and met President Abraham Lincoln published an interesting account of his 72-day voyage in the form of a 122-page hardbound book in Gujarati titled America ni Musafari in 1864. Printed by Daftar Ashkara Press, Bombay, it can be found in libraries.

As related in volumes of Parsee Prakash in Gujarati, Meherhomji was among the four Parsis who set sail on a voyage to England on the steamer Ganga on May 9, 1858, the others being Mancherji Hormusji Cama, partner of the Cama firm, and his assistants in the firm Cowasji Edulji Khambatta and Ardeshar Cowasji Mody.

Meherhomji left Liverpool on July 1, 1862 for New York along with Dosabhai Faramji Cama on the giant steamship Great Eastern. He maintained a diary of his daily experiences which makes for interesting reading. On August 19, 1862, dressed in Parsi attire and pugree, he had an audience with President Abraham Lincoln with whom he shook hands. On September 10, 1862 he left the shores of USA for England on the steamship Persia.

Meherhomji was one of the first three trustees of Europena Zarthostionu Dharamnu Khatu (Religious Funds of the Zarathushtrians of Europe, now known as Zoroastrian Trust Funds of Europe) along with Ardeshar Cursetji Wadia and Dadabhai Naoroji. He became a partner of Dhunjibhoy Ratnagar and Company in 1872. On March 3, 1877 he started a factory in Dadar, Bombay, named Pirojshah Pottery Works, to manufacture enameled earthen vessels. This factory was inaugurated by Behramji Jijibhai who congratulated the partners for starting a new industry in the country, according to a report in The Times of India of March 5, 1877. A fortnight later, Sir Philip Wodehouse, governor of Bombay visited this factory. Happy to see the work being done there, he strongly advocated that the public of Bombay should encourage such an enterprise.
