This column publishes milestones within the Zoroastrian community primarily for the latter half of August 2011.
An alarming divide was noticeable in the birth (one) and death (40) figures for the last fortnight of August 2011. Heart disease felled seven patients, of whom three were in the 80 and above age category. Cancer claimed six lives, pneumonia/lung disease and septicemia (four each). Three Zoroastrians each were victims of brain disease and kidney failure whereas two died due to diabetes. Malaria, hypertension, arthritis, hypoproteinmia (deficient protein in the blood plasma), urinary tract infection, multi organ failure, hypothyroidism (a group of symptoms caused by the deficiency of thyroid secretion), anemia, fever and scleroderma (a disease in which the tissues of the skin fill with fluid followed by hardening, deformity and ulceration). In the case of one death the coroner’s report was kept pending. The youngest and eldest to die were both females: one at 46 years, the other at 96. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last 15 days of August, in Bombay, was 77 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
