In the report on The Bombay Parsee Association competitions ("No shortcuts to success," Parsiana, January 7, 2019) only the winners are named while their fields of accomplishments are not mentioned. The article focuses on the guests of honor and their bhashans (lectures) when the focus should have been on the awardees.
At North South Foundation in Illinois, USA that gives scholarships for studies in engineering, agriculture and healthcare, we hold competition at the local, regional and national levels for 2,000 children of Indian origin. These children go on to win open national high school competitions including obtaining scholarships at US universities. They win national contests in spelling bees, maths, science and geography, far exceeding the American national population. One percent of our children are Parsis.
The power of competition is enormous and children attain adulthood and succeed beyond our wildest dreams. This has received news coverage across the USA. We focus on the children and give them the attention and plaudits they deserve, and not the guest speakers.
