In earlier times with dakhmenashini the entire body would be reduced to a skeleton within an hour or two. Where was the question of sun playing the primary role? Every month the dakhmas would be cleaned and the skeletons placed in the bhandar. Today we are left with pecking jungle crows, kites and rodents who are unable to do the job.
We still can work the system as per our tenets without defiling the natural elements of the earth provided we have a positive mindset and use "chemical hydrolysis” also called "bio-cremation.” Khurshed nagirashni can also be part of this system.
This environment friendly alternative to the present trend of disposal of bodies uses 95% of water with two 5% alkali [either potassium hydroxide (KOH) or sodium hydroxide (NaOH)] to reduce the body to bone fragments while the sterile solution is recycled to the earth. The average adult body takes two to five hours to complete bio-cremation.
