Noted ophthalmological surgeon Prof Dr Keiki Mehta of the Rotary Club District 3141, chairman for diabetes and chief coordinator has, along with district governor Gopal Mandhania and Arun Bhargava, conducted multiple camps throughout the city in which over 1,00,000 people have been screened for diabetes. Bombay has been called "the diabetic capital of India” and a write-up received from Mehta describes the project as "the world’s largest diabetic screening program.” Uncontrolled or undetected diabetes can irretrievably damage the retina, resulting in blindness.

Such a camp was conducted in the poorer areas of South Bombay — Sassoon Dock, Ganesh Murthi Nagar and Ambedkar Nagar — on October 9, 2016. A blood test using the latest HbA1C method was also done as was simultaneous screening for dengue, states the write-up.
At the South Bombay camp, Member of the Legislative Assembly Raj Purohit and municipal corporator Makarand S. Narwekar were in attendance along with Ashok Mahajan who has helped Rotary in its efforts to control polio in India, the write-up notes.
