I refer to the letter "Dissatisfied at Doongerwadi” by Jeroo Cama (Readers’ Forum, Parsiana, June 7, 2013). I agree with Cama completely regarding the shabby attire of the mobeds and support staff at Doongerwadi. Parsis take pride in saying that we are the cleanest and neatest, but the sight at Doongerwadi is simply appalling. What impression will non-Parsis have of us when they come to offer condolences there? In contrast, the pallbearers are well dressed and look clean. The Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) should arrange to clothe the mobeds and staff in clean white garments, especially during the ceremonies. Some kind of uniform should be made mandatory for the staff.
My brother passed away on June 7, 2013 and just 10 minutes before the funeral ceremony we were asked to produce two bottles of eau de cologne. Somebody had to be sent down immediately to fetch them. I was informed that this is a regular demand, whether actually required or not. Since cologne water seems to be a must at all funerals, I suggest that the BPP buy bottles in bulk and supply them for a charge, just as they are doing for even a two-inch nail (khila).
