Marvels of March

Come the month of March and we Parsis look forward to Jamshedi Navroz and Ava Yazad nu Parav and the Hindus to the festival of Holi, though the onset of spring is celebrated all over the world. The Sagar Upvan garden cum park at Colaba (established by eminent industrialist and conservationist Sohrab Godrej) attracts a number of birds like kites, crows, cattle egrets, pigeons, sparrows, parakeets (Indian parrots) and last but not the least the koel (pictured), noted for its melodious notes. It is a seasonal bird arriving in Bombay mid-March and departing in July when the monsoon is in full vigor. Over the years, I have observed its arrival on March 17, so very regulated is its internal calendar, a marvel of nature. Dr VISPY MEHER-HOMJI vispimeherhomji@gmail.com   ...
